What Should New Webmasters Do Every Day? This article outlines the daily tasks for SEO webmasters: checking keyword rankings, monitoring indexing and backlinks, updating original content, researching new keywords, publishing high-quality backlinks, analyzing competitors, and maintaining reciprocal links.

Many new website owners are busy every day: updating a few articles, posting a few backlinks, and browsing forums and discussion boards—and before they know it, the day is over. When asked about the results, they’re not really sure themselves. Our team also started out as beginners and worked our way up step by step, so we’re all too familiar with this situation—checking the data with tools every day, seeing little improvement, and getting excited for hours over the occasional small increase.

SEO is a long-term endeavor that relies on day-to-day progress; it’s unrealistic to expect results in just a day or two. When you’re feeling lost, instead of rushing around aimlessly, it’s better to clearly outline your daily tasks. Below is a daily checklist for webmasters that we’ve put together—follow it, and you’ll feel more confident.

  1. First, check changes in keyword rankings. The first thing you do every day when you turn on your computer is to check keyword rankings. Note down any changes in your main keywords and long-tail keywords right away. I recommend keeping a daily log in a spreadsheet; after collecting data for a while, you’ll be able to see keyword trends and determine which direction to focus your next optimization efforts.
  2. Next, check indexing, backlinks, traffic, and page views. After reviewing the rankings, examine changes in indexing status, the number of backlinks, IP traffic, and page views. We usually use Aizhan in conjunction with Webmaster Tools; Aizhan’s data updates slightly faster. Pay close attention to the number of indexed pages and the distribution across content sections—which types of content are indexed more frequently often indicates what kind of articles search engines prefer, which is very helpful for future topic selection. Changes in the number of backlinks should also be recorded and compared with the indexing data.
  3. Updating Articles on the Website: Once you’ve reviewed the data, start updating the articles. It’s recommended to set a fixed time for updates—for example, a specific time slot every morning—so that search engines get into the habit of crawling your site at that exact time. As for content, search engines are placing increasingly higher demands on originality. Rather than reposting content from other sources, it’s better to research the material yourself and write your own articles, naturally incorporating the keywords you’ve planned in advance. If you stick with this approach over the long term, the results will be far better than simply reposting content.
  4. Use tools like Baidu Index to discover new keywords. After updating an article, take some time to use tools like Baidu Index to discover new keywords and long-tail keywords to prepare material for future topics. This step may seem insignificant, but it’s actually about doing your homework in advance—if you’ve accumulated enough keywords, you won’t have to worry about running out of ideas when updating articles.
  5. Publishing High-Quality Backlinks Next up are backlinks. Since the introduction of the Green Vine Algorithm, the role of backlinks is no longer as direct as it used to be. Their primary value lies in attracting search engine crawlers to index your site, and only high-quality backlinks can effectively pass on link equity. Therefore, it’s better to have fewer high-quality backlinks than a large number of low-quality ones. Posting a few high-quality links each day is sufficient—for example, on highly relevant B2B platforms or article platforms that offer a good user experience. Keep detailed records of your posting activities, and avoid becoming a producer of spammy backlinks.
  6. Analyze Your Competitors’ Websites. Once you’ve finished working on your own site, don’t forget to check out your competitors. While we’re optimizing our site, our competitors are doing the same. Spend a little time each day comparing changes on their websites with those on ours, noting their update frequency, new sections, and backlink sources. Learn from their strengths and avoid their mistakes. Only by knowing both yourself and your competitors can you emerge victorious in every battle.
  7. Keep an Eye on Reciprocal Links: Although reciprocal links aren’t as effective as they used to be, they shouldn’t be completely ignored—they can still drive some traffic. More importantly, keep an eye on the status of the sites you’re linked to—if one of them is penalized, it could very well affect your site as well. If you notice anything unusual, contact the other party immediately to address the issue, and if necessary, remove the link decisively to prevent your site from being dragged down.

These are really the only things you need to do every day. They may not seem complicated, but it takes real dedication to stick with them day after day. There are no shortcuts in SEO; if you lay a solid foundation by doing the basics one by one, your rankings and traffic will naturally improve over time.
